Big Pharma has been taking a fair dose of flak lately.
It’s been called to account for making dodgy claims and employing questionable business practices.
Would you want a crowd like that to be looking after your well-being?
Maybe there’s another way to pursue health?
Books that describe an alternative to the regular health system abound.
They enthuse about how healthy we could all become if we just did things a bit differently.
So I bought one of those books, …but just when I was getting excited about adopting an alternative healthier approach …….
I read the disclaimer notice.
“This publication contains the opinions and ideas of the author. It is intended to provide helpful and informative material on the subjects addressed in the publication. It is sold with the understanding that the author and publisher are not engaged in rendering medical, health, or any other kind of personal professional services in the book. The reader should consult his or her medical, health or other competent professional before adopting any of the suggestions in this book or drawing inferences from it.
The author and publisher specifically disclaim all responsibility for any liability, loss, or risk, personal or otherwise, which is incurred as a consequence, directly or indirectly, of the use and application of any of the contents of this book.”
What is ‘alternative’ about consulting my regular medical health professional?
Would you really want to take advice from someone who “disclaims all responsibility” for anything and everything?
Can Carrying – Health Style
So I headed back to the bathroom medicine cabinet for a dose of ‘regular’ health.
Back to the world of pills, creams and potions – back to Big Pharma.
Back to people who will take responsibility for the advice they offer.
But the small print on the packaging was a little unsettling…
“If conditions persist, see your doctor or pharmacist’
‘If the incorrect dose is suspected, go to the hospital, even if you feel well.’
‘Consult your doctor before giving this medication to children.’
‘This preparation should not be taken if you have an impaired kidney function, check with your doctor”.
So it’s the local hospital, doctor and pharmacist that are carrying the risk if something goes wrong ? That’s who gets to carry the can.
Not Pharma?
It seems even Pharma wants someone else to accept responsibility for what happens to me.
I wonder who’s taking responsibility for what’s happening to Pharma?
Is there a notice written in small print on the boardroom wall?
One that says:-
“ Pharma specifically disclaims all responsibility for any liability, loss, or risk, personal or otherwise, which is incurred as a consequence, directly or indirectly, of the implementation and application of any decisions made by the management of this organization.”
You can find notices like this on a boardroom wall near you!
